The key to student success in all education is aligning
learning objectives with students’ goals and dreams.

Does your student (do you) have musical goals and dreams?

HOW TO DETERMINE IF I AM THE RIGHT TEACHER FOR YOU

  1. You have Goals & Dreams. My students can articulate their musical goals and dreams. Goals and dreams might include getting into a performing arts school such as OCSA or LACHSA, getting into a community college applied music program, getting into a prestigious university or music conservatory, winning scholarships or competitions, passing the MTAC Certificate of Merit exams through the highest level, being able to play Beethoven sonatas, Chopin etudes, Mozart piano concertos, or other classical, jazz, or ragtime piano on the concert stage, to sing pop music and play piano at the same time, to play an instrument or sing in a rock band, to play piano, organ, or sing at church, to write and record your own music, to improvise, to overcome stage fright, to become a teacher, to conduct an orchestra, or to win starring roles in musical theater or opera productions.

  2. You are Committed. My students make commitments and stick to them. My students commit to both short-term and long-term goals. My students are “go-getters,” don’t give up easily, and want to be challenged. My students commit to learning, to practicing, to rehearsing, and to performing. My students commit to a full year of lessons and participate in exams, festivals, and recitals, every year.

  3. You Love Music and the Arts. My students love music and the arts. My students love to listen to music, to watch live musical and maybe even theatrical performances, to perform music, to read about music, musicians, and maybe even music history, and perhaps to compose music and write songs, stories, or even plays. My students love to experience different kinds of music and arts, and enjoy collaborating with other musicians and artists, making music with them, sharing with them, and singing or playing musical instruments together.

  4. You are Seeking Full, Complete, Well-rounded Music Education. My students become capable musicians, whatever their unique specialty. Whether primarily piano, voice, or other instrumental, all my students, over time, will develop full musicianship skills, including sight reading, ear training, audiation, solfege, conducting, music theory, improvising, composing, songwriting, arranging, orchestrating, and scoring, performance practice, historical and cultural awareness, pedagogy, language, diction, and IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet), and even music production, recording, multimedia technology, and sound design.

All students, including pianists and other instrumentalists, should learn to sight sing and to audiate, and all students, including singers and other instrumentalists, should develop piano keyboard skills, regardless of music specialization. Students preparing for performing arts school, university, conservatory, competitive program, or professional auditions, will open themselves up to greater opportunities if you can read music, sing music on sight, and play your vocal or instrumental part on the piano keyboard. Would you prefer to join the auditioned collegiate chamber choir along with the best musicians at the conservatory, or the non-auditioned, all-come beginner choir for those who have less vocal/reading experience and skill? Even instrumentalists will likely be required to join a choir as a music major! And, most college-level programs require all music majors to achieve piano keyboard proficiency and music theory/musicianship proficiency prior to graduating. So start now! Students who have this proficiency at the time of their audition will increase their chances of getting accepted into the best programs and of winning scholarships and other financial awards.

QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE

Do students have to be a certain age?
Students can be any age, including for piano, singing, and all other music instruction. Even young children can have goals and dreams, and learning is a life-long endeavor. For students hoping to get into performing arts schools and music conservatories, preparation can start at any age, including at a very young age.

Do students have to be at a certain ability level?
Students can be at any ability level, which means students can be absolute beginners or can already have achieved very advanced levels. What’s important is that students have goals and dreams and are ready to work hard and to commit to achieving those goals and dreams.

Do students really have to audition?
Students audition by participating in a one-hour meeting that includes some teaching, some discussion, and some playing or performance (depending on student’s ability level). The audition will allow me to learn some things about student readiness, student goals and dreams, commitment level, and enthusiasm for learning.

OTHER THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

I only give 60-minute (one hour) lessons (minimum). 30-minutes are too short and anything less than an hour, weekly, is insufficient for quality instruction and healthy progress toward goals. (I sometimes offer special arrangements for very young students, siblings, or close friends to share a portion of the time together to increase efficiency and reduce costs.) Very advanced students might take 90-minute or even two hour lessons.

I offer many performance opportunities. Annual recitals are too infrequent and can lead to higher stress and unwanted performance anxiety. Frequent performance opportunities include small group practice performances, house parties and soirées, forums, master classes, festivals, exams, competitions, recitals, church music, and large-scale musical productions and concerts. Each quarter term includes at least four Saturday morning (less formal) forums and two (more formal) recitals. Frequent performance opportunities reduce stress, increase confidence, build up positive experiences, provide a social function to music lessons, and help develop positive relationships and even lifelong friendships.

I teach only 20 private students in my studio. Some teachers have huge studios of 80+ students. (40 hours per week, 30 minutes per student, is not uncommon.) This is spreading oneself too thin. I keep my private studio smaller so that I can focus on and prepare for individual students’ needs, provide specialized attention, and offer the kind of quality opportunities exceptional students need to thrive, to excel, and to stand out from the crowd.

All music students sing and learn the piano keyboard. I teach every student, including pianists, vocalists, and other instrumentalists, to sing, to audiate, and to play the piano keyboard. These skills are essential to becoming a well-rounded musician capable of sight reading music well, collaborating with other musicians, improvising, composing and arranging music, succeeding as a high school and/or college music major, and finding the most and best future professional opportunities as a working musician, music director, and music teacher.

All music students participate in MTAC Certificate of Merit. The Music Teacher Association of California’s Certificate of Merit program helps students stay focused on goals, provides additional performance opportunities, and guides students toward successful testing and assessment strategies and experience.

I offer combo piano and voice lessons. These combination lessons are perfect for students who wish to learn to play the piano and sing at the same time. (This ability is essential for future professional musicians who intend to perform or play for church services, weddings, celebrations of life, and other religious, social, and special events.)

I teach piano lessons using my own method. This piano method, Presto! It’s Piano Magic, has been developed and evolved over many years of teaching with input from the best music education researchers, practitioners, leaders, and pioneers, including Zoltán Kodály, ‎Émile Jaques-Dalcroze, Edwin E. Gordon, and Ruth Stevenson Alling. It is a very successful approach that gets students playing real songs all over the piano keyboard from the very beginning. My students learn quickly, correctly, and joyfully. Students learn proper piano playing technique, quality repertoire, memorization skills, musicianship, ear-training, notation and music theory, all in a way that inspires, motivates, and engages students in learning, and results in well-rounded, capable, confident musicians with real artistry at the piano.

New beginner music students receive a fun and very useful starter pack! All beginning music students receive a fun and helpful starter pack with their registration that includes these items!

Every student is special!

Piano lessons, voice lessons, and all music lessons are designed to meet the unique needs of each individual person.

As a music teacher, I strive to understand the goals, dreams, and ambitions of each student, and to help them achieve those goals. At the same time, I invite students to experience new things, to explore uncharted territory, and sometimes to break out of their comfort zones!… all at their own pace and with their own personal objectives, needs, and abilities in mind.

Music can be fun, challenging, and rewarding, and also deeply personal. Music is hands-on, performance-oriented, joyful, and has the potential to deepen participants’ creativity, critical reasoning, intrinsic motivation, and self-expression.
